Indefinite Leave to Remain

Indefinite Leave to Remain

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) is a visa which entitles the holder to live and work in the UK without restrictions.

ILR can be granted once you have lived in the UK for a certain number of years, depending on the visa you were previously granted.

However, you must understand that ILR is not a permanent visa. If after obtaining ILR you remain outside the UK for two or more years you will automatically lose your ILR.

Requirements for ILR

To become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain you must:

  • Be lawful living in the UK for a certain period of time

  • Not have breached  immigration laws during your stay in the UK and you must not have any criminal record

  • Not have spent a period of time outside the UK which exceeds 180 days in a 12-month period during the qualifying period

  • Have passed the Life in the UK test

  • meet the English test requirement at a B1 level as set out by the Common European Framework of Languages.
